Controversial Malaysian rapper Namewee has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of a Taiwanese influencer found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub two weeks ago.

Police say Namewee, 42, was the last person seen with 31-year-old Iris Hsieh, who was in Malaysia to discuss a commercial video that Namewee had agreed to direct, according to her social media manager.

Initially detained for illegal drug use and possession, Namewee has been re-arrested to assist in the investigation following the reclassification of Hsieh's death as murder. He turned himself in early on Wednesday, his lawyer stated, and remains in custody for six days.

Reports indicate that Namewee contacted emergency services after discovering Hsieh unresponsive in the bathroom. Police recovered nine blue pills believed to be ecstasy from the hotel room, leading to Namewee's initial arrest.

Despite denying drug use, tests confirmed the presence of various illicit substances. Following a court appearance where he pleaded not guilty to drug charges, Namewee was released on bail but now faces more serious allegations.

The case has taken numerous twists, with police claiming that Namewee went “into hiding” once the investigation into Hsieh's case intensified.

On social media, Namewee emphasized his willingness to cooperate, stating, I won't run away, amidst heavy scrutiny from the media.

Similarly, Hsieh, while not as widely known, had a significant social media presence. She garnered attention for her lifestyle content and was active on platforms like Instagram and OnlyFans before her untimely death. The investigation continues as authorities await post-mortem results to ascertain the exact cause of her death.
