In brief

Annual event features discussions on A.I.’s role in teaching, research, and future innovations

In January 2025, over 5,444 mathematicians gathered in Seattle to attend the Joint Mathematics Meetings (J.M.M.), making it the largest assembly of its kind. This year's official theme centered around "Mathematics in the Age of A.I.," pushing attendees to contemplate how artificial intelligence integrates with teaching, research, and their professional lives. Dr. Bryna Kra, president of the American Mathematical Society, stressed the urgency of addressing A.I.'s growing presence. “What does it mean to have A.I. as a co-author?” she posed, urging participants to engage with such pivotal inquiries. The event spanned January 8 to 11, comprising 3,272 presentations that showcased diverse mathematical topics.A notable highlight was a keynote by Yann LeCun, Meta's chief A.I. scientist, who reflected on the challenges facing machine learning. He humorously remarked, “The current state of machine learning is that it sucks,” emphasizing the limitations researchers face when attempting to replicate simple animal behavior, let alone human cognitive abilities. LeCun contended that advancing towards human-level A.I. necessitates developing a "large-scale world model" that can autonomously reason and plan based on a foundational understanding of the world. However, he acknowledged the significant obstacles that remain, particularly those that present intricate mathematical conundrums with no clear solutions. As A.I. continues to evolve, the discussions at J.M.M. hint at a future where mathematicians and A.I. work collaboratively, driving innovation and exploration in tackling the complex challenges ahead.
