A 'person of interest' who was detained in connection with a deadly shooting at Brown University in the US will be released shortly, local officials have said. Providence Police Chief Col Oscar Perez stated that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the detained individual, with Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha indicating that the evidence 'now points in a different direction.' The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are searching for additional video evidence to help track down the suspect.

Two people were killed and nine others were injured when a gunman opened fire in a classroom at the Holley engineering building at Brown University on Saturday. At a joint news conference, Col Perez revealed that investigators do not believe the detained person is the same as the individual identified in CCTV footage released on the day of the attack.

Following the incident, seven of the injured remain in stable condition, with one listed as critical, while another has since been discharged.

As the investigation unfolds, Brown University President Christina Paxson stated that all victims, including those killed and wounded, were students, mourning the loss with the university community and supporting the families affected. A vigil is scheduled for Sunday evening, while the situation has raised concerns regarding gun violence, marking the incident as part of a troubling trend of mass shootings in the United States.
