HONOLULU (AP) — An attempted murder trial is wrapping up for an anesthesiologist accused of trying to kill his wife during a cliff-side hike near a popular scenic lookout in Hawaii, with closing arguments expected Tuesday.

The trial started last month, nearly a year after Gerhardt and Arielle Konig went on a hike on the Pali Puka trail in Honolulu that ended with her bloodied and screaming that he tried to kill her. Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty.

The couple were on a weekend trip to Hawaii’s capital city for her birthday in March 2025 while their two young sons stayed home on Maui. Near a lookout offering sweeping views, Gerhardt Konig, 47 — upset about his wife’s relationship with a coworker — allegedly pushed her off the steep trail, bashed her head with a rock, and attempted to stab her with a syringe, prosecutors claimed.

The trial, with testimony livestreamed by Court TV, has aired the couple’s marital problems leading up to the hike, along with their versions of what occurred on the trail.

Gerhardt Konig stated in his testimony that his wife was having an affair, a detail he discovered by unlocking her phone while she was asleep. Arielle Konig described the relationship as an “emotional affair” involving flirty messages with a coworker and acknowledged it became a point of contention during their hike.

Arielle testified that her husband grabbed her and moved her toward the cliff’s edge, but she threw herself on the ground in an attempt to hold on. She described a struggle where she had to defend herself against her husband, who alleged that she hit him first with a rock.

Two hikers who heard Arielle Konig’s screams assisted her in getting down the trail, highlighting the serious nature of the incident. The Pali Puka trail, known for its dangerous conditions, has been closed by state officials due to safety concerns, yet hikers often overlook the warning signs.

Amidst the chaotic scene, Gerhardt Konig testified that he felt his marriage and career were over, leading him to contemplate jumping off the mountain after calling his adult son from a previous marriage. Despite the serious accusations, he denied ever trying to kill Arielle, stating that no syringe was found at the scene.

In the aftermath of the incident, Arielle Konig has filed for divorce, culminating a tragic chapter in their once-celebrated relationship.
