Billy Joel Shares Positive Outlook After Brain Disorder Diagnosis

The iconic singer-songwriter opens up about his health journey following a diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Billy Joel, the legendary five-time Grammy winner, has expressed a positive mindset two months after revealing his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). Speaking candidly on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the musician, who recently faced challenges with balance, stated, "I feel good," emphasizing that the term "brain disorder" sounds more severe than his actual experience. The 76-year-old musician had to cancel a number of concert dates in May, as his doctors advised that his condition worsened due to recent performances.

NPH is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain and is particularly common among older adults. In his Instagram post, Joel mentioned he is undergoing specific physical therapy and is committed to improving his health. His wife, Alexis Joel, expressed gratitude for the medical care received and shared hopes for a speedy recovery.

As a result of his diagnosis, Joel has canceled 17 performances planned for North America and Europe through 2026, including major concerts at Murrayfield and Anfield. Known for classic hits like "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," Joel recently wrapped up a celebrated decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden, with his last performance taking place in February 2025, after an incident where he fell during a show.
