In brief

Bhoomi Chauhan, a second-year business administration student, missed her Air India flight by just 10 minutes due to heavy traffic, resulting in her avoiding a tragic crash that killed 241 people. The flight, AI171, struggled shortly after take-off and crashed in a residential area. Chauhan reflects on her narrow escape and feelings of disbelief as she attempted to board the flight moments before the accident occurred.

Bhoomi Chauhan, a 28-year-old business administration student based in Bristol, experienced an unexpected twist of fate when she missed her flight to London after being delayed by heavy traffic en route to Ahmedabad airport. The young woman was scheduled to fly on Air India flight AI171, which crashed shortly after take-off, resulting in the deaths of 241 individuals on board and several more on the ground. Chauhan had been visiting western India for a holiday and found herself at the airport at 12:20 PM local time, just 10 minutes after boarding was set to start. Despite having checked in online, airline staff informed her she could not complete the boarding process, leading to her frustration and disappointment. "After missing the flight, I was dejected and thought about how if I had just left a little earlier, I could have boarded the plane," she recalled. She and her husband decided to leave the airport, discussing refund options with their travel agent when she received the devastating news about the plane's crash. The ill-fated flight took off in the afternoon but struggled for altitude and crashed approximately 30 seconds later, hitting a residential area and resulting in major fatalities. Among the deceased were families from different nations, while one passenger, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, survived and was treated for injuries. As emergency services worked tirelessly to extract victims and gather information, the tragedy prompted many to reflect on the lives cut short and the impact on the families affected. Chauhan described her experience as a "miracle," expressing disbelief that her situation ultimately led to her survival. As investigations unfold to find answers regarding the cause of the crash, local communities continue to mourn the profound loss of those who were aboard flight AI171.
