In brief
Supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan confront government forces in a bid for his freedom, resulting in violence.
In a bold display of defiance, thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan marched toward Islamabad on Monday evening, undeterred by a government-imposed lockdown and aggressive police measures. The protesters pushed past shipping containers set up by authorities to prevent their advance as they gathered on the outskirts of the capital, voicing demands for Khan's release from jail.Khan, imprisoned since August 2023, faces over 150 criminal charges that his supporters claim are politically driven. Despite the government's attempts to suppress his popularity, Khan maintains significant support, rallying his followers with calls for fresh elections and the reversal of judicial power restrictions. He accuses the ruling military-backed government of colluding to dismantle his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (P.T.I.), and undermine democratic processes. As tensions flared, one police officer was reported dead, along with multiple injuries among officers and protesters. Led by Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, and key assistant Ali Amin Gandapur, the demonstrators began their rally in Peshawar, dismantling barriers and clashing with law enforcement who responded with tear gas. The Pakistani government has framed Khan’s protests as incitements of chaos, steadfastly rejecting any negotiations for his release. The situation continues to evolve as supporters persist in their efforts to secure his freedom amidst a backdrop of violence and political turmoil.
