In brief

C Gambino, whose real name was Karar Ramadan, was murdered in June 2024, and three men were sentenced for their roles in the incident, highlighting ongoing gang violence in Sweden.

In a significant legal ruling, a Gothenburg court has sentenced three men in their 20s to lengthy prison terms for their involvement in the murder of renowned hip-hop artist C Gambino, born Karar Ramadan. The crime, a shooting that occurred in a parking garage last June, was described by prosecutors as ruthless and premeditated. Prior to his death, C Gambino had gained national recognition, being awarded as the top hip-hop artist at the 2023 Grammis music awards. All three individuals were convicted of aiding and abetting murder, although the court exonerated two of them from direct murder charges, citing insufficient evidence to conclusively identify the shooter. The firearm involved remains missing, and a vehicle tied to the crime was later discovered in flames. The murder has been linked to a gang conflict in the area, but authorities indicated that there is no proof connecting C Gambino to any criminal organizations. In recent years, Sweden's major urban centers have grappled with escalating gang-related violence, resulting in numerous deaths, often involving young recruits being used in violent crime. The rapper, aged 26 at the time of his death, was shot in what the court characterized as a calculated attack resembling an execution, shortly after returning from the gym.Despite investigators not uncovering direct DNA evidence from the suspects, they utilized GPS tracking from mobile phones and extensive CCTV footage, which revealed the vehicle entering the parking facility a week in advance while it awaited the rapper’s arrival. Emergency responders struggled to communicate effectively upon their arrival, and C Gambino succumbed to his injuries about an hour later in the hospital. The court's sentencing included a life term for one 22-year-old man, while two others received sentences of 15.5 and 12.5 years. A fourth individual was found guilty of arson related to the burning of the getaway car. In a concurrent case, a 14-year-old was convicted for executing a murder at the behest of the notorious Foxtrot gang, underscoring the pervasive nature of gang violence in Sweden, where minors under 15 do not face criminal liability.Meanwhile, law enforcement in Iraqi Kurdistan has apprehended a significant suspect linked to the Foxtrot gang, known for involvement in multiple homicides in Sweden, including the recent Skurup murder, revealing the extensive and alarming reach of gang violence affecting the nation.
