In brief

Violent sectarian clashes in northwest Pakistan have left at least 25 people dead following an ambush that killed 42 Shiite individuals, highlighting ongoing tribal tensions in the Kurram district.

Violent clashes erupted overnight between Sunni and Shiite tribes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and numerous properties set ablaze. The violence took place in the Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan, and flared up just a day after a gunman ambush on Thursday that left 42 Shiite individuals dead, all despite being under security protection.Kurram, with a population of approximately 800,000, has a nearly equal mix of Sunni and Shiite Muslims, intensifying sectarian strife. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the clashes commenced on Friday afternoon in areas where both groups reside closely together. Muhammad Shoaib, a Sunni local, reported a heavily armed attack on the main market by rival sect members, leading to extensive destruction of shops and residences.“The night was filled with heavy gunfire, with large weapons being used without restraint,” he stated, explaining the rapid escalation of violence and the cycle it creates. Fearing for their lives, many residents, including Shoaib’s family, fled to safer areas. This incident underscores the persistent and violent nature of sectarian divides in the region, with locals expressing ongoing fear and frustration over the turmoil they've been experiencing for years.
