In brief

A recent outing at a Brussels nightclub brought together elderly residents, many of whom had not danced in decades, highlighting efforts to enhance social interaction among seniors.

In Brussels, a remarkable event unfolded recently at the Mirano nightclub, where the sound of bass-heavy electronic music filled the air and excitement hummed late into the night. Among the typical crowd of vibrant youth sporting trendy outfits, a group of retirement-home residents made a striking appearance, many in their 80s and 90s. The men donned sharp suits adorned with pocket handkerchiefs, while the women showcased their style in sequined tops and bold lipstick.“Just look at how joyful everyone is,” remarked 99-year-old Guillaume Vanderweyen, who was enjoying his first club experience in four decades. He expressed the importance of such unique experiences for the enriching quality of life. Dancing alongside him until the early morning, Vanderweyen, a retired carpenter, moved with remarkable energy, a testament to his daily exercise routine. Thanks to the inspiring lineup of artists including Rihanna and Nigerian performer Kizz Daniel, the 16 residents from various Brussels retirement homes found themselves laughing, moving, and reconnecting with their youthful spirits. This delightful venture was orchestrated by Papy Booom, a Belgian nonprofit devoted to curbing loneliness among the elderly by crafting enjoyable social opportunities. The event not only aimed to provide entertainment but also to foster connections among seniors who often find themselves isolated in their later years.
