In brief

Three lawyers who represented Aleksei Navalny, the prominent opposition leader who died last year in prison, have been sentenced to prison for allegedly aiding an extremist group. The sentencing underlines the Kremlin's relentless effort to curb Navalny's influence even posthumously.

On January 17, 2025, a court in Petushki, Russia, convicted Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin, and Aleksei Liptser, imposing sentences of up to five and a half years. The verdict follows their arrest in October 2023 while Navalny was incarcerated in a high-security penal colony. Russian prosecutors claimed the lawyers' actions in relaying correspondence from Navalny to his followers constituted involvement in an extremist organization. Despite Navalny’s demise, he remains a significant figure in Russian opposition politics, actively challenging the regime of President Vladimir Putin.Navalny, who had previously rallied against the Kremlin, saw his movement labeled extremist prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, amplifying official efforts to isolate him and his supporters. In this latest trial, Kobzev received the longest sentence of five and a half years, while Sergunin, who pleaded guilty, received three and a half years, and Liptser was sentenced to five years.Following the verdict, Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Aleksei Navalny, urged for their release while labeling them as political prisoners. Lyubov Sobol, a prominent ally, condemned the ruling as a calculated act of retribution by the Kremlin against those who remained loyal to Navalny.
