In brief
The recent disruption occurred on one of the year's busiest travel periods, Christmas Eve, causing significant delays nationwide.
American Airlines faced a temporary halt in operations for about an hour on Tuesday due to a vendor technology issue that affected the systems required for releasing its planes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the downtime was lifted just before 13:00 GMT. This outage coincided with Christmas Eve travel rush, leading to considerable inconvenience for passengers. In an official statement, American Airlines conveyed its apology and emphasized that the company was mobilizing all available resources to minimize delays and help customers reach their destinations swiftly. “We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this morning,” the airline said. The airline is closely monitoring the situation, which is still causing delays of up to two hours for certain flights as recovery efforts continue. As of now, real-time tracking services indicate departures from crucial US airports are resuming, with most flights managing to take off as scheduled. Passengers reported being stuck either on the tarmac or waiting at the gates during the outage, with some even disembarking from their aircraft. A CBS reporter posted a video on social media from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where a gate agent informed travelers about the resumption of boarding for a flight to Philadelphia, noting that "the system is slowly coming back."This is not the first incident American Airlines has faced; back in July, the airline, alongside other major carriers, was forced to ground flights when communication issues arose due to a global IT outage caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike.
