Indian Pilot Heroic Response During Flydubai Attack
An Indian captain aboard a Flydubai aircraft headed for Israel was confronted by a co‑pilot who allegedly tried to seize the cockpit. In a subdued interview conducted from his hospital bed, Captain Smit Machchhar described the terrifying scene and his decision to fight back.
The confrontation began when the attacker entered the cockpit with a weapon. The captain—who said he could not allow a “killing spree” on the plane—used the aircraft’s emergency position, opening the cockpit door to give passengers a chance to intervene. According to witnesses on the flight’s flight deck and statements from the airline, the other pilot was subdued before any serious harm could occur.
The plane landed safely in Saudi Arabia, and all 350 people aboard survived. The incident has attracted praise from aviation safety bodies and prompted official condolences. “I am grateful to everyone who survived,” the pilot, visibly emotional, told reporters. He added that he received a call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recovery.
Flydubai confirms it is cooperating with security investigations and will review protocols. Ukrainian aviation safety regulators have already issued a statement urging stricter cockpit access controls, citing the incident as a reminder of the high stakes of cabin security in international travel.
