In brief
Ambassador Huckabee labels the incident a "criminal and terrorist act" amid escalating tensions in the region.
In a statement on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee urged Israeli authorities to conduct an "aggressive investigation" into the death of Sayfollah Musallet, a 20-year-old Palestinian-American who was killed during a clash in the West Bank. He characterized the incident as a "murder" and referred to it as a "criminal and terrorist act." Huckabee's statement is notable given his previous support for Israeli settlement expansion in areas regarded as illegal by the international community. The call for accountability follows a spike in settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied territories amidst the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Musallet was among two Palestinian men who lost their lives in violence near Sinjil, a town in northern West Bank, on Friday. The second victim, Mohammad Shalabi, aged 23, was also reported to have been shot during a confrontation with Israeli settlers. The circumstances of their deaths remain unclear, as both armed settlers and Israeli soldiers were present during the incident. The Israeli military has yet to provide a definitive account of the altercation, noting that tensions escalated when Palestinians allegedly threw stones at Israeli civilians, injuring two individuals slightly. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem has publicly acknowledged Musallet’s death and confirmed his citizenship, intensifying scrutiny on the Israeli response to such incidents as the situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate.
