In brief

With ongoing Israeli airstrikes resulting in significant casualties, many Iranians are fleeing the capital, facing fuel shortages and disrupted communications while trying to find safety.

In a tumultuous weekend, rising tensions in Iran have prompted a mass exodus from Tehran, where Israeli airstrikes have left devastation in their wake. Iranians, such as poet Meisam, 41, are abandoning the capital in search of safety as chaos ensues across the city. Meisam, who chose to share only his first name due to the sensitive climate, recounted his harrowing journey back to his hometown in East Azerbaijan Province, noting the overwhelming traffic and long waits at gas stations, where dwindling fuel supplies have forced many to ration their resources.Since the commencement of these airstrikes on Friday, which have reportedly resulted in over 200 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries in Iran, the atmosphere has turned increasingly dire. In retaliation to these attacks, Iran's own military actions have led to the loss of 24 lives in Israel and hundreds of injuries.A sense of dread amplified on Monday following an Israeli emergency evacuation order aimed at northeastern Tehran, targeting key military infrastructures. The order, disseminated via social media, left many without the crucial updates due to widespread disruptions in both internet and phone services—a heartbreaking reality for numerous residents.Fuel shortages have become commonplace, with gas stations closing their pumps or instigating strict limits on fuel distribution to vehicles. Reports from six inhabitants in the area painted a grim picture of the unfolding crisis, as residents scramble to escape both the physical and psychological consequences of the unfolding conflict. As uncertainty looms, the resilience of the Iranian populace is put to the test in these challenging times.
