In brief

As Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has signed letters revoking more than 300 visas, aiming to remove individuals from the U.S. based on their political actions or criminal history. He emphasized a thorough review process for each case as he continues to enforce strict immigration policies.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he has revoked approximately 300 visas of students, visitors, and others, motivated by their foreign policy views or criminal activities. Speaking aboard an Air Force jet during a trip from Suriname to Miami, Rubio indicated that his visa review process has been intensive since he took office in late January.Rubio commented, “I don’t know actually if it’s primarily student visas. It’s a combination of visas. They’re visitors to the country. If they’re taking activities that are counter to our foreign, to our national interest,” he asserted, “we’ll revoke the visa.” Each case is personally reviewed by Rubio before final decisions are rendered. He highlighted that any visa holder charged with a crime would automatically forfeit their visa. The policy extends to permanent U.S. residents, who can also lose their green cards under his directive. “My standard: If we knew this information about them before we gave them a visa, would we have allowed them in?” he posed. His stance indicates a stringent approach to immigration policy and national interest. When questioned about how cases are identified for visa revocation, Rubio was vague, emphasizing that revealing such processes would jeopardize efforts to find more individuals. His statements reflect a growing trend toward strict immigration enforcement concerning individuals embodying views or actions deemed inappropriate under U.S. policies.
