In brief

At least three fatalities have been reported, with numerous individuals missing as floods wreak havoc in the Himalayan region.

The devastating flash floods struck the Rasuwa district early Tuesday, resulting in the collapse of the critical Nepal-China Friendship Bridge. Authorities confirmed that at least three lives were lost in the disaster, and multiple people are currently unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations. Initial assessments indicated significant damage at the customs yard near the bridge crossing, where hundreds of vehicles and cargo containers were parked when the floods hit. Reports also mention power outages following damage to local hydropower facilities.Rescue teams from Nepal's army and police have deployed helicopters to locate individuals presumed missing. Among those unaccounted for are three police officers, nine Nepali civilians, and six Chinese nationals. According to Binod Ghimire, a Nepal police spokesperson, the police personnel were attempting rescues when they were swept away. Most of the civilians include drivers who operate in the busy border trade.Nepal's mountainous topography makes it particularly susceptible to flash floods, and the frequency and severity of such disasters have escalated in recent years due to climate change. Changing weather patterns have resulted in erratic rainfall, leading to increased incidents of floods, landslides, and glacial lake outbursts. Last year alone, at least 495 fatalities were attributed to monsoon-related catastrophes. The current monsoon season, stretching from June to September, has already posed significant challenges, affecting not just Nepal but also neighboring regions in India, where heavy rains have resulted in severe flash floods in Himachal Pradesh. Since June 20, the Indian state has reported close to 80 deaths and at least 35 missing due to similar climatic events. As the search continues for those lost, recovery efforts are focusing on stabilizing the region and mitigating further risk as relentless rains persist.
