In brief
Senator Mark Warner disclosed that Chinese hackers infiltrated U.S. telecoms, enabling them to listen to calls and read texts, raising serious national security concerns amid ongoing investigations.
China’s recent penetration into America's telecommunications infrastructure is reportedly broader and more severe than previously acknowledged. In an interview, Senator Mark Warner, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a former telecommunications executive, warned that hackers had unfettered access to sensitive communications, stating, “The barn door is still wide open, or mostly open.”The breach, attributed to a group linked to Chinese intelligence named Salt Typhoon by Microsoft, allowed Chinese hackers to listen to phone calls and read text messages over the past year. Officials are still assessing the extent of the information accessed, with concerns that they may have monitored conversations from high-profile individuals, including President-elect Donald J. Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.Initial investigations suggested that the infiltration was primarily through stolen passwords targeting systems that tap communications under legal authorization, which involves major U.S. telecom providers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. As the investigation progressed, officials noted that the hackers exploited outdated equipment and vulnerabilities across various network connections. While the breach was made public, intelligence agencies believe the Chinese hackers might have paused their activities to evade detection, raising alarms about their ongoing presence and the lack of clarity regarding their operations within the systems. Senator Warner emphasized that the extent of the intrusions remains uncertain, underscoring that the investigation has not fully flushed out the hackers, stating, “We’ve not found everywhere they are.” The Senate committee has been kept updated through government briefings and discussions with industry leaders regarding this critical cybersecurity threat.
