In brief

The National Crime Agency expresses concern over a dramatic increase in online gangs targeting young people for abusive and violent behaviors.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom has raised an alarming alarm regarding the dangers teenagers face from online groups promoting sadistic and misogynistic content. In their recent crime trend report, the agency detailed a staggering sixfold increase in incidents associated with these online networks from 2022 to 2024. The NCA indicated that many teenagers are being groomed or blackmailed into sharing harmful content, with young boys often driving this trend.Graeme Biggar, the NCA's director general, revealed that these online communities are integrated into the same platforms that adolescents engage with daily, making them difficult to avoid. The agency particularly expressed concern about young girls being coerced into self-harm and, in extreme cases, encouraged to attempt suicide. The NCA's 2024 National Strategic Assessment highlighted the troubling dynamics, noting that while adults are also engaged within these communities, teenage boys are frequently at the forefront of sharing harmful content and targeting vulnerable young girls, some as young as eleven. With the proliferation of these dangerous groups, the agency emphasizes the need for robust measures to protect youth from such risks.
