In brief

In a bid to rejuvenate its tourism sector, the Chinese government has announced an extension of visa-free stays for travelers in transit, now allowing up to ten days in the country. This significant move comes as China seeks to recapture international visitors amidst recent geopolitical challenges and the fallout from strict pandemic policies that curtailed travel.

Starting from 2023, citizens from 54 nations, including the United States, can transit through designated Chinese airports without needing a visa if they are journeying to a third country. Previously, travelers were permitted to stay for just three to six days based on their entry points, but under the newly implemented policy, this duration has been expanded to a maximum of 10 days or 240 hours.Additionally, the government has enhanced travel flexibility by permitting visitors to explore beyond the regions where they originally entered. The number of approved entry and exit points has also increased dramatically, with 21 new locations added to the 39 existing ports. The move signals China's desire to invite more international tourists to experience its culture and scenic beauty, marking a significant shift in its post-pandemic tourism strategy. The country aims to broaden its appeal as a travel destination and restore its position in the global tourism market.
