In brief

Karim Khan, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has announced his request for arrest warrants for key Taliban leaders, Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani. Citing severe violations against Afghan women, girls, and the LGBTQI+ community, Khan alleged that these officials are committing crimes against humanity through systematic persecution.

Amid a tightening grip since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban has enforced stringent laws that obliterate women's presence in both public and many private spheres. These so-called religious decrees have led to the banning of women from employment and various social activities. Notably, in 2023, all beauty salons, once remaining public spaces for women, were closed, and educational restrictions were implemented with girls banned from high schools and women from universities — leaving Afghanistan as the singular nation with such measures.A U.N. rapporteur has characterized the Taliban's actions as a form of "gender apartheid." Many Afghan women are fleeing the country, while others strive to find means of escape from their restrictive lives. The pursuit of arrest warrants seeks to hold accountable those responsible for these ongoing atrocities.
