In brief
Tropical Storm Trami made landfall in central Vietnam on Sunday, causing significant disruptions and flooding, just days after leaving a deadly toll of at least 80 people in the Philippines.
On October 27, 2024, Tropical Storm Trami impacted Vietnam after wreaking havoc in the Philippines, where it caused extensive floods and led to casualties. Upon reaching the vicinity of Danang, Vietnam, the storm brought maximum sustained winds of 55 miles per hour, falling short of hurricane classification. The storm had crossed the South China Sea from the Philippines, where it notably resulted in the deaths of at least 80 individuals and left 66 injured, with 34 reported missing as confirmed by the Philippine Office of Civil Defense. As Trami progressed inland into Vietnam, authorities raised alerts concerning potential flooding and landslides, particularly forecasting up to 16 inches of rain in areas south of Danang through Monday night. Flight operations were suspended at four central Vietnamese airports in anticipation of the storm’s arrival but resumed by Sunday, easing concerns for travelers. In the Philippines, the storm forced over 500,000 residents to evacuate, damaged nearly 28,000 homes, and disrupted electricity to over 150 municipalities, complicating relief efforts due to obstructive floodwaters. Meanwhile, another tropical disturbance, Kong-rey, lingered near the Philippines with similar wind speeds, expected to affect Luzon before moving toward Japan. This recent storm follows Typhoon Yagi's deadly path from last month, which was responsible for at least 24 deaths across China and the Philippines, ultimately making landfall in Vietnam with severe impacts.
