In brief

The recent Halloween celebrations in Shanghai met with a heavy police presence, a stark contrast to last year’s acceptance of the holiday as a symbol of cultural expression. During the past weekend, authorities demonstrated a strong stance against festive participants, detaining individuals dressed in humorous and political costumes. Notably, the police escorted away characters such as a Buddha and a giant poop emoji, as well as impersonators of public figures like Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian.

Last year, Halloween served as a vibrant outlet for young people to criticize various societal issues, including the aftermath of prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns and the challenging job market. Social media celebrated the previous year’s festivities as a form of collective relief and a celebration of cultural openness, with the Shanghai government even acknowledging these expressions as a sign of urban tolerance. However, this year, following mounting restrictions on personal freedoms and the aftermath of anti-lockdown protests in 2022, authorities became increasingly vigilant. The decision to enforce stricter measures around Halloween reflects a broader trend of curbing public expressions, regardless of the political intent behind them. As such, Shanghai's Halloween has transformed from a display of collective enjoyment into a controlled environment where individual expression is heavily monitored and subdued.
