In brief
A 17-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Daniil Bardadim, faces terrorism charges in Lithuania after being accused of setting fire to an IKEA store as part of a broader Russian operation to instigate chaos in Europe. Bardadim received an enticing job offer that promised a car and salary but instead turned him into an unwitting participant in sabotage operations conducted by Russian military intelligence.
The teenager, who fled the conflict in Ukraine, was approached with an alluring job that promised a BMW and substantial pay after arriving in Warsaw, Poland. Unfortunately, what initially seemed like a golden opportunity devolved into a nightmare. Lithuanian authorities have linked Bardadim to incidents of arson that are considered part of a larger pattern of Russian covert attacks across Europe.Investigators reveal that over the last two years, there has been a marked increase in covert Russian operations targeting various infrastructures—shopping centers, undersea cables, and railways—all attributed to the strategies of Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU. The number of these disruptive actions has reportedly tripled between 2023 and 2024, raising alarms among European nations about a potential escalation in aggressive tactics beyond Ukraine.
