In brief

Israeli warplanes have bombed Yemen's main international airport for the second time this month, destroying the last aircraft used by the Houthi militia. This extensive airstrike comes in response to ongoing missile attacks by the Iran-backed group.

Israeli warplanes conducted another bombing raid on Yemen's primary international airport on Wednesday, responding to recent missile attacks attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi militia. The strike, which occurred after a devastating attack earlier this month, resulted in the destruction of the final plane utilized by the Houthi-led government, according to statements from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and the airport's director, Khaled al-Shaief. Al-Shaief shared images on social media showing burning wreckage as firefighting crews attempted to control the inferno. He confirmed that the aircraft was the last operational plane associated with Yemen's national airline at Sana airport. This facility serves as a critical access point for over 20 million Yemenis in Houthi-controlled regions, facilitating essential medical services, medicines, and humanitarian aid. Since October 2023, the Houthis have intensified their missile and drone attacks on Israel, claiming to act in solidarity with the Palestinian cause in Gaza. Both the Houthis and the Gaza-based Hamas share affiliations with Iran's network of proxy forces throughout the Middle East. In recent days, sirens echoed across Israeli cities as alerts were issued concerning incoming Houthi missiles. The Israeli military confirmed that it successfully intercepted all missile threats.
