In brief

In February, over 13,000 residents of Santorini have fled due to relentless earthquakes, with experts warning of potential further seismic activity.

As February unfolds, the idyllic Greek island of Santorini, known for its breathtaking views and bustling tourism, faces an unprecedented crisis. With more than 13,000 of its 15,500 residents departing amid thousands of earthquakes, the island has turned eerily quiet, largely abandoned by its native populace.Since January 25, the seismic activity around Santorini has intensified dramatically, registering up to 160 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 or higher within just the first ten days of February. The shaking peaked with a significant magnitude-5.2 quake northeast of the island, which was felt as far as Athens. The relentless tremors, occurring at times just minutes apart, have not only rattled the substantial local population but also alarmed tourists, mainly from Asia, who are still on the island.Despite the serene beauty of its landscape, Santorini is currently a monument to the fragility of nature. Local experts warn that while signs of stabilization appear, predicting the seismic future remains fraught with uncertainty. “A lot of the seismic energy has been released, but we still can’t rule out a large earthquake,” says Vassilis Karastathis, director of the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens. In response to the ongoing quakes, authorities have taken preventive measures, including the closure of schools and restrictions on large gatherings. Emergency personnel are on high alert, with resources ready for potential evacuations and landslide response efforts. Psychologists and priests are providing support to the shaken residents, reflecting the deep emotional toll the events have taken on the community. For now, the outlook for Santorini remains unclear as its once-bustling streets await some semblance of normalcy amid the persistent tremors.
