Flash flooding has wreaked havoc across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, resulting in at least 164 fatalities in just the past 24 hours. The bulk of the casualties, totaling 150, were recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a mountainous province in northern Pakistan. The intense rainfall also led to the destruction of at least 30 homes and caused a rescue helicopter crash, claiming the lives of its five crew members.
In addition to the casualties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nine individuals lost their lives in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and five fatalities were reported in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region. Authorities have issued a heavy rain alert for the northwest and anticipate continued rainfall until August 21. Several areas have been declared disaster zones in response to the unfolding crisis.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's chief minister, Ali Amin Gadapur, confirmed that the helicopter, identified as M-17, crashed during rescue operations in Bajaur due to adverse weather conditions while attempting to assist the affected region bordering Afghanistan. Images from AFP depict gatherings of mourners around an excavator working to clear mudslides, with communities devastated by loss and beginning funeral prayers in makeshift sites.
Tragedy struck again in Indian-administered Kashmir, where rescuers retrieved bodies from debris after a flood swept through a Himalayan village, resulting in at least 60 deaths and many individuals reported missing. This monsoon season, which extends from June to September, is critical for South Asia, accounting for approximately 75% of the region’s annual rainfall. However, the relentless rains have led to a staggering death toll, surpassing 300 so far this season.
The Punjab province, home to nearly half of Pakistan's population, has seen rainfall this July exceed last year's levels by 73%, coinciding with an uptick in fatalities from floods and landslides. Scientists are increasingly linking these extreme weather events to climate change, suggesting that such incidents are becoming more frequent and severe.
