In brief

Recent military strikes by Israel in Tehran, which is as densely populated as New York City, have led to evacuation orders for hundreds of thousands of residents. With ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, the population faces serious safety threats as military operations intensify.

Tehran, with a population of approximately 10 million within around 300 square miles, is experiencing an exodus comparable to the density of New York City. According to the CIA World Factbook, Tehran houses about 10% of the entire Iranian population, with many more residing in its metropolitan region. Currently, images and videos from the capital depict chaotic scenes—long queues at gas stations and heavy traffic as citizens flee in fear. The situation escalated on Monday evening following the Israeli military's evacuation order targeting District 3, an affluent residential area, affecting several hundred thousand residents. Hours later, President Donald J. Trump echoed the urgency on Truth Social, calling for the entire Tehran populace to “immediately evacuate.” Shortly afterwards, the Israeli military issued further evacuation directives for District 18, a poverty-stricken neighborhood located just south of Mehrabad International Airport. This warning came amid five consecutive days of escalating military confrontations, during which the Israeli military claimed it was targeting Iran's military and critical energy infrastructure, particularly focusing on facilities associated with nuclear weaponry. Verification by The New York Times confirmed that strikes have occurred in both densely populated areas like Tabriz and Mashhad, alongside less populated regions including Natanz, the host of Iran's largest uranium enrichment center. The region is fraught with tension as the implications of the ongoing conflict become increasingly dire for Tehran's residents, reflecting a catastrophic impact on daily life.
