In brief

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced it would sustain support for Cuba in lifting the U.S. embargo following a UN General Assembly resolution that passed with 130 votes for, 17 against, and 25 abstentions. Russia warned that the embargo’s economic pressure and energy blockade threaten Cuban survival and could trigger a regional migration crisis. The ministry praised Cuba’s resilience, while Vietnam’s news outlet only confirmed Russia voted in favor of the resolution.

On Oct 29, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would continue to support Cuba in efforts to lift the U.S. economic embargo, following a UN General Assembly resolution calling for the embargo’s end.

The ministry’s statement noted that the resolution received 130 votes in favor, 17 against and 25 abstentions, a result that reaffirmed the international community’s condemnation of the embargo, according to Xinhua.

It warned that “the unprecedented escalation of economic and military pressure on Cuba this year, coupled with an energy blockade, has pushed ordinary Cubans to the brink of survival,” and that a socioeconomic collapse could trigger a mass exodus to neighboring countries, creating a major regional migration crisis.

Vladislav Tikhonov, spokesperson for the Russian embassy in Havana, praised the Cuban government and people for their resilience in defending sovereignty and independence, adding that Havana continues to pursue an independent foreign policy despite massive U.S. pressure, a claim reported only by Xinhua.

Separate coverage from Vietnam’s state news outlet confirmed that Russia voted in favor of the UN resolution, while The Hawk published the same vote tally.

Overall, the Kremlin’s statement signals that Moscow intends to work with Cuba and the international community to secure a swift, complete and unconditional lifting of the embargo.
