In brief
Four members of Congress have landed in El Salvador to continue efforts aimed at securing the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident erroneously deported to a Salvadoran prison.
The Democratic representatives, Robert Garcia from California, Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida, Yassamin Ansari from Arizona, and Maxine E. Dexter from Oregon, arrived on Sunday, emphasizing their aim to highlight the inadequate responses from the Trump administration following Supreme Court orders regarding Mr. Abrego Garcia’s case. “While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported,” Mr. Garcia remarked, stressing that such actions contradict American values of due process and justice for immigrants. Their visit follows a previous trip by Senator Chris Van Hollen, who met with Mr. Abrego Garcia last week after overcoming initial resistance from Salvadoran authorities. Abrego Garcia, born in El Salvador, was living in Maryland with his family when he was apprehended and deported. His initial legal proceedings had prevented his deportation due to the grave dangers he would face in El Salvador. Despite being initially recognized as a mistake by the Trump administration, officials later claimed that the deportation was lawful, currently placing the onus on President Nayib Bukele to facilitate his return. On Sunday, the Justice Department reported to the federal court that Mr. Abrego Garcia had been moved to a different detention facility in El Salvador—a recent transfer from a high-security prison known for housing violent offenders. Throughout their visit, the congressional team plans to engage with U.S. Embassy officials and local human rights organizations while advocating for the status and release of other individuals wrongfully detained after deportation from the United States.
