In brief

Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, articulated the country's position on the mixed signals from the U.S. in the context of ongoing nuclear talks, emphasizing their commitment to negotiating calmly. While the U.S. administration has fluctuated between limiting and completely dismantling Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Iran's leadership remains focused on the next round of discussions.

On April 16, 2025, Araghchi confirmed a second round of talks with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff set for Saturday in Rome. This follows initial discussions in Oman, which were deemed constructive by both parties. Araghchi acknowledged the recent inconsistency in U.S. messaging, calling it "not helpful," but he aims to assess the U.S.'s real demands during the negotiation process. He reiterated the importance of their nuclear enrichment for peaceful energy purposes as “nonnegotiable,” while expressing Iran's willingness to build trust regarding any concerns. Despite internal divisions in the Trump administration about their precise demands, the overarching goal remains preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
