In brief
At the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, international diplomats express concern over the potential retraction of U.S. commitments to the Paris Agreement under a Trump administration, complicating global climate initiatives and financial strategies.
World leaders convened at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday, focusing on the urgent need for funding to combat climate change. However, discussions have been overshadowed by the recent U.S. election and the anticipated return of Donald J. Trump to the presidency in January. Negotiators are increasingly worried that Trump may withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement and abandon pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the U.S. being one of the largest contributors to global emissions, many nations question how to make significant climate progress without America's cooperation. Despite these challenges, some diplomats are trying to maintain a positive outlook. “Success does not depend on one country alone — it depends on all of us,” stated Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s deputy foreign minister, stressing the collective responsibility in the fight against climate change.
