Article Text: In a troubling escalation of violence, the Amsterdam police have detained four individuals in connection with antisemitic incidents involving Israeli soccer fans during a recent match. This comes after unrest flared between supporters of Ajax, a prominent Dutch team, and Maccabi Tel Aviv, an Israeli club, amid heightened tensions due to international conflicts. The confrontations occurred on Thursday and Friday, drawing a significant police response. Authorities initially apprehended 62 individuals; however, the majority were released shortly thereafter. The four remaining suspects are being held under allegations of public violence, according to police spokeswoman Marijke Stor.Eyewitness accounts and videos captured moments leading up to the match, showing Israeli fans chanting provocative phrases while being escorted by police. The atmosphere was charged, particularly given the unrest connected to the ongoing war in Gaza. Police efforts included riot control units and mounted officers to separate fan groups and prevent further clashes during the game at the stadium.Among those detained was a 26-year-old identified through CCTV footage, bringing attention to the ongoing nature of the investigation, with potential additional arrests expected. Police emphasize that the release of individuals does not absolve them of suspicion as inquiries continue.“Other arrests can still be made, of course, because the investigation is still ongoing,” Stor stated, noting that prosecutors have yet to press charges against anyone involved in the incidents thus far. The city remains vigilant to ensure safety during future events, reflecting a broader concern regarding rising antisemitism and public safety at sporting events.
