WELLINGTON, Nov. 3 — New Zealand approved a record 41,091 new homes in the year to September 2026, an 18 % rise from the previous year, according to official data released by the national statistics agency Stats NZ, reported by Xinhua.

The agency said stand‑alone houses reached 19,228 approvals, up 20 % or more than 3,200 from 2025, marking the highest annual count since 2022. Multi‑unit developments accounted for the remaining 21,863 consents, a 16 % increase year‑on‑year.

Auckland led the growth, with 6,426 stand‑alone house consents, a 36 % jump, and more than 1,700 homes approved in the city, accounting for over half of the nationwide rise, the agency added.

In September alone, 3,570 new homes were consented, down 4.7 % from September 2025; seasonally adjusted data showed a 7.9 % fall in consents from August. These figures underscore the sustained demand for residential construction amid tight housing supply.

Rapid Growth Concentrated in Auckland

The surge in Auckland's approvals reflects the city’s ongoing challenge of balancing urban density with housing affordability, a policy focus highlighted by local housing‑bills.
