CHICAGO (AP) — As encounters with federal immigration agents around Chicago increase, tactics used by activists and immigrant leaders to fight back are also escalating.

The Trump administration has singled out Chicago as a key target for immigration enforcement, using traffic stops in immigrant-heavy areas and targeting day laborers outside hardware stores.

“We will not back down,” wrote Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a recent post, sharing footage of arrests at suburban Chicago homes.

Activists and local leaders are also defiant, trying to deter agents, warn residents, and keep awareness on a man killed by an immigration officer last week.

Focusing on Day Laborers

During a recent operation by ICE, the focus appeared to be on traffic stops in primarily immigrant Latino neighborhoods. Activists reported a rise in arrests of day laborers during stops at local Home Depot and Menards stores.

Many activists argue that these arrests are unjust and assert that many agents wear masks and drive unmarked vehicles, which makes the operations seem even more clandestine.

Volunteer groups have quickly mobilized in response, posting about sightings of immigration agents and dispatching teams to assist families of those arrested.

“Our neighbors who build, paint, and fix our city have been the target of these attacks,” said Miguel Alvelo Rivera of the Latino Union.

Community Organizing

Organizing efforts have taken many forms, including bike patrols that monitor ICE activity and emergency whistles distributed to residents to signal nearby immigration enforcement.

“This has worked for us. People are asking us, ‘Can I get a whistle?’” said one organizer. “It helps keep the community safe.”

Increased Tensions

The number of arrests has been difficult to track, raising skepticism among community members and local officials. Activists are demanding greater transparency and accountability, especially after tragic incidents involving fatal police shootings.

The stakes are high for families involved, as many remain fearful due to the unpredictable nature of ICE operations. As the community rallies together, their efforts underline the ongoing struggle for immigrant rights amid intensifying federal actions.
