In brief
North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, displayed a somber side as he commemorated the sacrifices of North Korean soldiers involved in Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
Kim Jong-un's recent public appearance showcased a coffin draped with the North Korean flag, symbolizing the sacrifice of lives lost in the ongoing Ukraine war. The somber event, broadcast on North Korean state television, highlighted Kim's efforts to deepen military relationships with Moscow while paying tribute to fallen soldiers. Accompanied by his daughter Kim Ju-ae and a Russian delegation, Kim attended performances celebrating the anniversary of a mutual defense treaty signed with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This event marked the first time the public was exposed to footage of North Korean troops actively engaging alongside Russian forces, a move designed to bolster nationalistic sentiments among North Koreans. Reports from U.S., South Korean, and Ukrainian officials estimate that North Korea sent approximately 14,000 to 15,000 troops and provided significant military support to Russia, resulting in around 4,700 casualties. The North Korean regime only recently confirmed these deployments, pledging to honor those who fell in battle and to erect a monument in their memory in Pyongyang. As the event unfolded, state broadcasts included images of troops alongside caskets of the deceased, accompanied by performances reinforcing the notion of heroism and sacrifice, resonating with patriotic themes intended to strengthen domestic loyalty to Kim’s regime.
