Thousands of small and midsize businesses urge government action to counter the economic downturn.

Thousands of small and midsize companies in Germany, crucial for the nation's economy, have raised alarms regarding the worsening economic situation. As reports indicate that Germany may enter a recession in early 2024, these businesses are pleading for an end to political disputes that have hindered potential stimulus measures. An open letter, supported by 18 associations from various sectors, highlighted the urgency of addressing the country’s declining international competitiveness. Among the businesses' main concerns are soaring energy prices, labor shortages, slow digitization efforts, and high taxes. The Bundesbank's latest report suggests a contraction of 0.3 percent in late 2023 could lead to a technical recession, with low export activity, cautious consumer spending, and declining investment attributable to increased borrowing costs. Economy Minister Robert Habeck has described the current economic state as “dramatically bad,” emphasizing the need for decisive political action to avert further decline.
