In brief
Spain has restored nearly all electrical service after a major power outage that lasted around 18 hours, impacting millions and causing disruptions across the Iberian Peninsula. The cause remains unclear, with investigations ongoing.
Spain's national power company, Red Eléctrica, announced early Tuesday that almost all electrical service has been reestablished following a widespread blackout that hit both Spain and neighboring Portugal. The outage, which lasted nearly 18 hours, disrupted airports, trains, traffic lights, and other vital infrastructure across the region.By 6 a.m. local time, Red Eléctrica reported that 99 percent of power demand in Peninsular Spain was being met, signaling a return to normalcy after the significant disruption. Peninsular Spain accounts for the majority of the country's territory, and it was reported that the power failure also had a notable impact on Portugal. In Portugal, the electricity and gas provider, REN, announced late Monday that it had successfully restored 85 of its 89 substations and switching stations that supply the national grid. However, some areas there still remained without power as of Tuesday morning. The reason behind the massive blackout was still under investigation, although early assessments indicated no evidence of foul play, including cyberattacks. With tens of millions affected, the focus is now on understanding the cause and ensuring future reliability. This situation remains fluid, with updates expected as investigations continue into the blackout that left significant portions of the Iberian Peninsula in darkness.
