In brief

Roxie, a baby red panda at Edinburgh Zoo, tragically died due to stress caused by fireworks during the Bonfire Night celebrations. This incident has reignited discussions about the impact of loud noises on animals and prompted a petition for stricter fireworks regulations.

Roxie, a baby red panda born at the Edinburgh Zoo, has sadly passed away at just three months old. Her death, reported on November 5, came shortly after the loss of her mother, Ginger, and was attributed to stress from the loud fireworks associated with the annual Bonfire Night festivities. Initial hopes for Roxie’s recovery had surged when zookeepers saw her eating independently, despite her recent trauma. However, the joy was short-lived as camera footage captured her extreme agitation from the ongoing firework noises. “Roxie was extremely frightened by the fireworks,” reported Ben Supple, the deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which oversees the zoo. The distress ultimately led to Roxie becoming ill, and tragically, she choked and died shortly after. "It's heartbreaking to see such a young life lost. Roxie had the potential to be an excellent ambassador for her species," Mr. Supple added. In light of this heartbreaking incident, the zoological society is advocating for stricter regulations on fireworks displays, especially those related to Bonfire Night, known for its extensive use of fireworks. This year's display has faced criticism as it coincided with Roxie's sensitive state after losing her mother. A public petition calling for tighter controls on fireworks has garnered over a million signatures and was recently submitted to the British government for consideration.
