In brief

On Saturday, Chinese paraglider Peng Yujiang accidentally soared to 8,500 meters due to a strong updraft while testing equipment. Captured on camera, the exhilarating ordeal left him battling extreme conditions, including icy temperatures and low oxygen levels. Authorities are now investigating the incident, leading to Peng's six-month suspension for unauthorized flight activities.

A remarkable incident took place in north-west China, where a paraglider named Peng Yujiang endured an extraordinary and perilous ascent to 8,500 meters (27,800 feet) due to a powerful updraft. At the age of 55, while testing his new equipment over the Qilian mountains, Peng was unexpectedly lifted 5,000 meters higher than his starting altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level. This incident was documented with a camera attached to his glider, with the shocking footage gaining popularity on Douyin, China's equivalent of TikTok.As Peng found himself engulfed in a cloud, he described the harrowing experience, saying, "Everything was white. I couldn’t see any direction." The conditions were extreme; at that altitude, inadequate oxygen levels posed a significant threat, and temperatures might have dropped to as low as -40°C. Despite his dire situation, Peng was striving to descend safely, stating, "I wanted to come down quickly, but I just couldn’t." During the tumult of spinning in the air, he reportedly may have lost consciousness.Having practiced paragliding for four and a half years, Peng did not initially intend to fly that day, as he was merely assessing the fit and comfort of his parachute on the ground. Unfortunately, strong winds unexpectedly swept him off the ground, culminating in that precarious skyward journey. In the aftermath, Chinese officials have launched an investigation into the incident, leading to a six-month suspension of Peng's flying privileges due to the unauthorized nature of the flight, as reported by state-run Global Times.
