In brief
In a surprising turn during a meeting with South African leaders, President Trump included a contentious video depicting apartheid-era chants by Julius Malema, stirring discussions about race and politics in South Africa.
Julius Malema, a prominent South African politician, made waves even in his absence during a recent Oval Office meeting between President Trump and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa. The White House presented a provocative video showcasing Malema's inflammatory apartheid-era chants, setting a contentious atmosphere as Trump reiterated claims of racism and violence afflicting the white population in South Africa, who largely hold more economic power than the Black majority. At 44, Malema leads the Economic Freedom Fighters party, which calls for land redistribution from white owners to Black South Africans. Despite his radical agenda, the party received less than 10% of the votes in the 2024 elections. Commenting on the Oval Office meeting, Malema took to social media platform X to express his disdain: “A group of older men meet in Washington to gossip about me. No significant amount of intelligence evidence has been produced about white genocide.”The political climate stirred by Malema has been fraught with controversy; in a notable 2023 rally, he infamously shouted “Kill the Boer!” targeting Afrikaans-speaking farmers, descendants of European settlers, responsible for the apartheid regime. His rhetoric and political stances continue to draw both derision and support, exemplifying the volatile intersection of race and politics in South Africa's contemporary landscape.
