In brief
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a prodigious talent from Bihar, was purchased by Rajasthan Royals for ₹11 million, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning cricket career.
In a remarkable feat, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar has become the youngest player ever to secure a deal in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the richest cricket league in the world. He was sold to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for an impressive 11 million rupees (approximately $130,500) during the recent auction held in Saudi Arabia.Suryavanshi, a left-handed batter, has already made a name for himself, representing his state in prestigious tournaments including the Ranji and Mushtaq Ali trophies and playing for India’s Under-19 team. His auction attracted bids from both the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, but it was RR, where Suryavanshi trained previously, that ultimately clinched the deal.Traditionally, Indian cricket has been dominated by metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Delhi; however, the IPL has successfully expanded its reach by discovering talent from rural regions and small towns. Suryavanshi made waves earlier this year when he debuted in the Ranji Trophy against Mumbai at just 12 years old. He has since played five matches, with a top score of 41, but his standout moment came with a stunning century in an unofficial Under-19 Test against Australia. The Rajasthan Royals' management recognized Suryavanshi's potential during a training session and are excited about his future development within the franchise. While Indian regulations prohibit child labor for children under 14, no such restrictions exist for sports, allowing young players to compete internationally.Despite his success, Suryavanshi’s family faced hardships, even selling their land to support his cricketing ambitions. His father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, a farmer who has worked various jobs, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievement, declaring, "He is not just my son now but is Bihar's son." He remains focused on keeping Suryavanshi grounded, stressing, "This IPL auction doesn’t go to his head. He still has a long way to go."
