In the heart of Gaza, three Palestinian freelance journalists who contribute to the BBC have openly described their dire circumstances as they battle to feed their families in the wake of relentless military conflict. Faced with relentless challenges, they often go without food for spans of two days or more, recording vital footage even as they suffer profound personal losses and displacement.

One journalist, who has previously withstood an injury from shrapnel, declared this moment as “the hardest time” in his life, encapsulating the overwhelming crisis that has ensued. Disturbingly, UN agencies have issued warnings about an impending man-made starvation crisis, attributing responsibility largely to Israel's control over supplies entering Gaza. However, Israel has staunchly denied any culpability.

For many journalists in the region, the struggles they face parallel those of the communities they aim to document. Out of respect for their security, the BBC has withheld their identities. A camera operator from Gaza City mournfully shared about his autistic son, oblivious to the current war, who desperately indicates his need for food. Similarly, a young colleague has taken on the responsibility of providing for his family during these trying times, voicing his anxiety over the basic essentials that have become increasingly scarce.

Reports reveal that journalists are pushing themselves to continue working under extreme fatigue and hunger; one veteran journalist noted he has lost over 30kg (approximately 66 lbs) due to prolonged conditions of war. His productivity has significantly suffered as he grapples with dizziness and a state of delirium, conditions he describes as debilitating.

Moreover, access to food has deteriorated, with empty markets and improvised solutions becoming the norm. Many researchers note an alarming number of Palestinian journalists have already lost their lives in the ongoing conflict. The BBC and other news sources are calling for the urgent re-establishment of safe passage for journalists to and from Gaza, while also emphasizing the dire need for food supplies to reach the vulnerable civilian population.

Despite their perilous reality, journalists remain committed to documenting the harrowing truth, hoping to shine a light on the situation for the outside world. However, they urgently implore for international assistance, stating that the humanitarian crisis has escalated to unprecedented levels.
