In brief

Typhoon Danas made an unprecedented landing on Taiwan's crowded west coast, resulting in two fatalities and over 300 injuries, while nearly 400,000 households lost power.

Amidst severe weather conditions, Typhoon Danas made landfall late Sunday in Chiayi County, leading to widespread chaos and destruction across Taiwan. Early Monday reports indicated that approximately 400,000 households were left without electricity as the storm wreaked havoc in densely populated regions—unusual for typhoons which typically hit the less populated eastern coastline. Categorized as a Category 1 hurricane by Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, Danas moved offshore after successfully crossing Taiwan and was projected to approach mainland China later in the day. Schools and businesses were forced to shut down across multiple cities and counties as the government braced for the aftermath of the storm, marking Danas as the first typhoon to strike Chiayi County since record-keeping began in 1958.Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te noted that the typhoon followed an atypical path, warning that the entire island would experience adverse weather in succession. Tragically, two deaths were confirmed in Tainan—the first a 60-year-old man whose breathing support failed due to power outages, and the second a 69-year-old man who died when a tree fell on him, according to the National Fire Agency. The specific circumstances of the injuries sustained by over 300 additional victims remain undetailed by officials, though emergency services are mobilized across affected areas.
