In brief
Authorities declare a major incident as two large sinkholes threaten nearby homes.
A sudden geological event has unfolded in Surrey, England, where a pair of large sinkholes emerged along a residential road, prompting emergency evacuations. This incident has been serious enough for local authorities to declare a major incident. The first sinkhole manifested on Godstone High Street late on Monday and expanded considerably by Tuesday, measuring approximately 65 feet by 20 feet and reaching a depth of 16 feet. A second, smaller hole appeared on the opposite side of the road, measuring 16 feet by 16 feet and also 16 feet deep. Fortunately, both holes have since stabilized and are no longer expanding. While the exact cause remains unidentified, geologists have put forth several theories. The region is underlain by weakly cemented sandstone that can be subject to erosion, particularly following heavy rains or disruptions like a burst water main. Andrew Farrant, a geologist with the British Geological Survey, indicated that recent weather changes or plumbing failures could lead to such collapses.Increased demands for housing in the UK have strained existing infrastructure, while climate change-related heavy rainfall poses additional risks by affecting aging water systems, geologist Vanessa Banks explained.Despite the alarming situation, officials confirmed that no one is in imminent danger. However, roughly 30 residents were evacuated from their homes. One displaced homeowner, Noosh Miri, expressed concern over the safety of their property, stating, “Our house is not secure at all. We don’t know the extent of the damage but we do know we won’t be going home for some time.”
