In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that initial inquiries showed their forces did not fire at civilians in the area near the aid distribution center. They instead released drone footage claiming to show armed individuals throwing stones and shooting at civilians collecting aid in Khan Younis. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), responsible for the aid distribution, also refuted allegations of casualties at its location, suggesting that the reports may have been exacerbated by Hamas. Nonetheless, accounts from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) confirmed that they treated numerous patients with serious gunshot wounds, indicating the violence during the aid collection.

Local journalists revealed distressing scenes as bodies and injured individuals were transported to the Red Cross field hospital using makeshift means, including donkey carts, due to restricted access caused by military operations. Reports indicate that over 200 individuals sought medical treatment after the incident, with 79 receiving care at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Victoria Rose, a British surgeon at Nasser Hospital, shared her observations of the overwhelming number of patients, all suffering from gunshot wounds. The situation underscores the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza, with medical facilities and resources stretched beyond capacity as violence and chaos prevail.
