In brief
NAACP alleges environmental injustice at xAI’s facility which operates near Black neighborhoods.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI, known for its Grok chatbot, is under legal scrutiny as the NAACP has announced a lawsuit concerning air pollution linked to its Memphis supercomputer facility. The complaint, filed Tuesday, accuses xAI of operating natural-gas-burning turbines without the necessary permits in South Memphis, a community predominantly populated by Black residents. Derrick Johnson, the NAACP president, condemned the situation, expressing concern over the normalization of environmental abuses by wealthy corporations setting up hazardous operations in underserved areas. In response, xAI asserted its commitment to environmental standards and community welfare, claiming that the temporary power systems are compliant with current regulations. The data center was established last year in a repurposed manufacturing site and is said to house what Musk touts as the largest supercomputer globally, requiring energy comparable to that used by around 100,000 residential households. Augmenting the legal challenge, the Southern Environmental Law Center, representing the NAACP, highlighted that aerial photography taken in March revealed 35 gas-burning turbines at the facility producing excessive heat and emissions. The revelation raises serious questions about the environmental impact of xAI's operations and whether adequate measures were taken to protect the local population from potential harm.
