On Thursday, July 10, 2025, Taeil, a 31-year-old former member of the popular K-pop group NCT, along with two accomplices, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for the rape of a Chinese tourist visiting South Korea. The trio had previously pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the incident that occurred last year.

Local reports reveal that the three men met the victim in a Seoul bar and later transported her to a residence where the assault took place while she was intoxicated. Prosecutors had initially pushed for a harsher seven-year sentence, highlighting that the defendants seemingly relocated the victim to impede her ability to recall the attack's details.

In court, Taeil, whose legal name is Moon Tae-il, appeared somber in a simple black shirt and slacks, bowing his head as the presiding Judge Lee Hyun-kyung delivered the verdict. “The crime is severe,” she remarked, noting the psychological trauma inflicted upon the victim in a foreign environment.

Despite the judges’ stern comments, the courtroom was silent as the sentences were pronounced, drawing sharp criticism online. Many social media users expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that the punishment did not adequately reflect the gravity of the crime.
