New homeowners, while in the midst of renovations in a house located in eastern France, stumbled upon a far more unsettling discovery than expected – the remains of the previous owner, Aloïs Iffly, who had been missing since 2009. The find came to light during an inspection of the attic, where the skeletal remains were concealed in a small cubbyhole.

Regional authorities identified the remains and shared that Iffly, who disappeared at the age of 81, left behind a significant mystery that remained unsolved for 15 years. His spouse continued to reside in the property until her death in 2020, after which the house was sold in 2023.

Prosecutor Olivier Glady stated that the scene appears to lean toward a suicide, with a rope still hanging in the attic at the time of the discovery on November 2. The home is located in Erstroff, a quaint village not far from Saarbrücken, Germany.

The new owners were initially investigating a leak in the roof, unaware of the closure to a long-running search that was about to unfold. As authorities work to determine the definitive cause of Iffly’s demise, the body has been dispatched to Strasbourg for an autopsy, with findings expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
