In brief
The closure signifies a critical blow to Ukraine's war efforts as the region faces increasing Russian aggression.
The tension escalates in Ukraine's eastern front as the last operational coal mine, crucial for the steel industry, shuts down due to Russian military advances. Located near Pokrovsk, this coking coal mine had been a lifeline for the country’s steel production and, by extension, its war effort. On December 26, Anton Telegin, a miner for 18 years, made a grim journey to the mine to collect wages amidst looming danger. This visit was different; Russian troops were reported at the mine’s gates, making the risk palpable.Recent months have seen intensifying Russian attacks, with a significant strike knocking out the mine's electricity and halting operations. Many miners sensed an imminent closure, leading some to leave, taking only personal items as they prepared for the worst. Metinvest, the mine's owner, confirmed the closure, marking the end of Ukraine's desperate attempts to maintain operations against overwhelming odds. The loss of this mine not only impacts local miners but also represents a severe reduction in the country's coal production at a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict.
